Descriptive sections

0. Summary

BahnBonus is Deutsche Bahn's free loyalty program aimed at long-distance train passengers. For every euro spent on ICE/IC/EC tickets and BahnCards, participants receive bonus points and status points. Bonus points can be redeemed for free journeys, seat reservations, or upgrades to 1st class; status points unlock three levels of privileges (Silver, Gold, Platinum). The program weaves a narrative of sustainable mobility into every touchpoint with the brand.

1. Objectives and context

The program aims to increase the frequency of DB long-distance rail travel and to build preference over alternative modes of transport (car, aviation). An additional goal is to gather data on traveler behavior and to expand the partner ecosystem with hotels, car rentals, and other mobility services.

2. Target group

The program is aimed at regular and occasional long-distance train passengers (ICE, IC, EC) residing in the EEA, with an emphasis on people traveling for business or tourism. The status tier system rewards business travelers generating high annual value. Minimum age requirement: 16 years.

3. Architecture and type

  1. Registration - the participant creates or logs into a DB customer account (DB Kundenkonto) and activates BahnBonus in their profile; registration is free and available via bahn.de or the DB Navigator app.
  2. Earning points - with every purchase of a long-distance ticket or BahnCard (ICE, IC, EC), both bonus points (Prämienpunkte) and status points (Statuspunkte) are automatically credited simultaneously - 1 point of each type per 1 euro of the price paid. Bonus points can also be earned with partners (hotels, car rentals); status points cannot be earned with partners. Additional points are available for selected activity in the BahnBonus app and in promotional campaigns.
  3. Redemption for rewards - bonus points are redeemed in the PrämienWelt: seat reservation from 99 pts, free regional ticket from 1,500 pts, free 2nd-class long-distance ticket from 3,500 pts, upgrade to 1st class from 1,500 pts, donation to social and environmental causes from 20 pts, merchandising products (sustainable only). Status points serve exclusively to reach and maintain a status level - they are not redeemable for rewards.

4. Earn & burn mechanics

  • Accrual: 1 Prämienpunkt + 1 Statuspunkt for every 1 euro spent on DB long-distance tickets (ICE, IC, EC) and BahnCards; the basis is the price rounded to whole euros; promotional campaigns may offer higher accrual. Bonus points are also earned with partners (Accor ALL, Europcar, Leonardo Hotels, etc.) - Prämienpunkte only. Regional tickets, the Deutschlandticket, and S-Bahn journeys do not earn points.
  • Threshold and redemption: seat reservation from 99 bonus points; regional ticket from 1,500 pts; 2nd-class long-distance ticket from 3,500 pts; 1st-class upgrade from 1,500 pts; donation from 20 pts. Status points are not redeemable.
  • Reward forms: free journeys, seat reservations, class upgrades, merchandising products (sustainable), donations to environmental and social projects. Status privileges: free onboard drink (Silver+), exclusive zone on the train (Silver+), DB Lounge access (Gold+), bonus campaigns (Gold+), personal advisor (Platinum).
  • Point expiration: Prämienpunkte expire 3 years after being awarded (at the end of the quarter) if not used earlier. Statuspunkte expire 365 days after being awarded. A status level is valid for 12 months from the moment it is achieved.

5. Emotional value

BahnBonus explicitly weaves a climate narrative into the program mechanics - the slogan "Jede Bahnfahrt zählt! Fürs Klima. Und für Sie." (Every train journey counts! For the climate. And for you.) equates consumer loyalty with an ecological choice. Participants perceive their points not only as a financial reward but as confirmation of a responsible travel style. The registration bonus (up to 350 pts) and the absence of an entry fee lower the barrier to joining.

6. Gamification

  • Two separate point types (bonus and status) with different redemption paths create a sense of dual progress.
  • Three status levels (Silver / Gold / Platinum) with increasing privileges and a 12-month validity limit motivate regular travel so as not to lose status.
  • Bonus campaigns and time-limited promotions (communicated via the app and email) create a FOMO effect and drive additional activity.
  • The BahnBonus app centralizes gamification - without it, some status privileges are unavailable.

7. Differentiation

BahnBonus stands out in the European landscape of rail loyalty programs by combining an eco-friendly brand narrative with a solid, multi-tier status system and an open partner ecosystem (hotels, car rentals, Accor ALL). Splitting points into two types - bonus and status - reduces the risk of abuse and protects the operator's financial commitments. The migration to Comarch CLM in 2025 signals an ambition to build a modern, scalable, enterprise-class CRM platform.

8. Data and personalization

  • Data collected: first name, last name, address, email address, date of birth, purchase history, app usage data (viewed content, clicks, OS version, device identifier, system language, app version).
  • Consents: consent to email marketing is granted and withdrawn in the DB customer account; all contractual communication takes place exclusively by email.
  • Personalization: transaction history is visible in the account and app; personalized bonus campaigns and offers are sent by email and through push notifications in the BahnBonus app.

9. Technology

  • BahnBonus app (iOS/Android) - the main tool for using statuses and privileges; without it, some functions are unavailable; the DB Navigator app serves as a supplementary channel.
  • Platform: from 2025, migration to Comarch Customer Loyalty Management (CLM) - a modular, enterprise-class loyalty system.
  • Integrations: DB customer account (bahn.de), DB Navigator app, external partners (Accor ALL, Europcar, Leonardo Hotels, etc.) with their own gutschrift (crediting) mechanisms.

10. Communication and lifecycle

  • Communication channels: email (the only form of contractual communication), push notifications in the BahnBonus app, in-app content.
  • Onboarding: registration confirmation by email, welcome bonus (up to 350 pts for a BahnCard and newsletter sign-up), BahnBonus number (from 06.2026: 12-digit customer number) available in the app and online account.
  • Retention / reactivation: status levels are valid for 12 months - an approaching expiration naturally motivates travel; bonus campaigns and personalized offers sustain engagement; the absence of a participation fee reduces the risk of churn.

11. Conclusion / inspiration for the almanac

BahnBonus shows that a points-based program in a regulated industry (public transport) can stand out narratively, not just mechanically - weaving ecological values into every message and touchpoint is a model for brands that want to build not only transactional but also identity-based loyalty.
