Descriptive sections
0. Summary
Currys Perks is a free, non-transactional membership program run by the British electronics retailer Currys. There are no points to collect - in exchange for membership and marketing consent, the customer receives monthly member discounts, competitions and prize draws, and partner benefits (including free Apple subscriptions) by e-mail.
1. Objectives and context
Currys' first loyalty program, launched with the 2021 rebranding. Objectives: retention, engagement and building a "lifetime relationship" with customers who rarely buy expensive equipment, and above all growing the marketing database and acquiring data for personalization (more than a third of revenue comes from customers signed up to direct marketing channels).
2. Target audience
Technology and home appliance customers in the United Kingdom - from occasional buyers to tech enthusiasts ("tech lovers"). The program does not require a purchase, so it covers the brand's entire marketing database, not only active buyers.
3. Architecture and type
- Registration: free online (currys.co.uk/perks) or in-store; an e-mail address and marketing consent are required (the sign-up replaces the earlier marketing opt-in).
- Receiving benefits: the member receives regular e-mails with discounts, codes, invitations to competitions and partner offers; no points are accrued.
- Redemption: one-off use of a given offer/discount code at online checkout or participation in a prize draw.
4. Earn & burn mechanics
- Accrual: no point accrual - the program is non-transactional; benefits are granted on the basis of membership and sign-up to e-mail communication, regardless of purchase value. Member discounts are delivered to the inbox each month (if you sign up during a month, in the following month).
- Threshold and redemption: no points threshold. Each member can use a given offer once; the same applies to discount codes - the code must be entered when completing the purchase (a code added while browsing but used later stops working). Each offer has its own expiry date and conditions.
- Reward forms: member discounts and discount codes; competitions and prize draws (equipment, tickets, trips - e.g. "win your basket", Perks Power Play); free partner subscriptions (currently 2 free months of Apple Music, Apple Arcade and Apple Fitness+ for new/returning customers; at the program's launch - a free 3-month Apple TV subscription); partner benefits (including Beer52, Tastecard, Free Soul).
- Point expiry: not applicable (no points); timing is determined by the expiry date of each individual offer or code.
5. Emotional value
The program communicates the brand's slogan "Currys. And then some." and "We help everyone enjoy amazing technology, for life" - it positions Currys as a partner present between infrequent equipment purchases. The element of surprise ("monthly surprises") and free gifts builds a sense of appreciation without the need to spend money.
6. Gamification
- Monthly "surprises" and competitions/prize draws (e.g. Perks Power Play with weekly winners) that sustain recurring engagement.
- "Invite-only" offers and secret sales that build a sense of membership exclusivity.
- The one-off nature of offers creating a sense of urgency to use the coupon.
7. Differentiation
Unlike competitors' points programs, Currys Perks foregoes earn & burn mechanics in favour of a purely benefit-based, e-mail-driven model: discounts, competitions and partner benefits instead of collecting points. This is a solution that is cheap to implement and geared towards expanding the database and personalization rather than rewarding purchase volume.
8. Data and personalization
- Data scope: contact details (e-mail) and the customer profile from the marketing database; purchase data and insights used to personalize content.
- Consents: enrolment in the program combined with marketing consent; opt-out via the "unsubscribe" link in e-mails or in the Privacy Policy (removal within 28 days).
- Personalization: "relevant and interesting" offers matched to the customer throughout the year based on collected data.
9. Technology
- A digital channel based on e-mail (offers "straight to your inbox"); no dedicated loyalty app with a points account.
- A campaign and competition platform (the engage.currys.co.uk and qualifioapp.com domains handling sign-ups and competition mechanisms).
- Integration with the Currys group's CRM/marketing database and with the currys.co.uk store (discount codes redeemed at online checkout).
10. Communication and lifecycle
- Channels: e-mail as the main vehicle for benefits; the currys.co.uk/perks page and in-store communication.
- Onboarding: first e-mail a few days after sign-up; the Apple offer code a few days after registration together with activation instructions.
- Retention/reactivation: monthly discounts and competitions, campaigns to win back dormant customers (e.g. Family Fun Days), partner benefits.
11. Conclusion / inspiration for the almanac
Currys Perks shows that in the category of infrequent, expensive purchases (electronics) a loyalty program can deliberately forego points. Take-away: a member-benefit model based on marketing consent, discounts and competition gamification cheaply builds a database and engagement when purchase frequency is low.
