Descriptive sections
0. Summary
Decathlon Active is a free points-based program rewarding both purchases and sports activity, as well as eco-friendly choices (2nd Life, rentals). The program's hub is a mobile app - the customer accumulates points that are automatically converted into discount vouchers, while also enjoying a package of non-points benefits.
1. Objectives and context
The program was created to fill a data gap: despite a large number of transactions, Decathlon did not know its customers well enough. The goal is to increase return rate, CLV and the active customer base, while at the same time shifting from mass to personalized communication based on real sports preferences.
2. Target group
Active athletes and people who play sports recreationally in Poland, regardless of discipline or skill level. Rewarding physical activity rather than only spending attracts people for whom sport is a lifestyle, not an occasional purchase.
3. Architecture and type
- Registration: on decathlon.pl, in the Decathlon app or with a store employee - instant creation of a Decathlon Account with a Decathlon Card (QR code/number).
- Earning points: 1 pt per PLN 1 spent on purchases (transaction counted in blocks of PLN 50 = 50 pts); additional points for sports activity, 2nd Life, servicing, rentals and reviews.
- Automatic conversion: every 250 pts → a PLN 5 Loyalty Voucher available in the app or sent by email; the voucher is valid for 90 days from generation.
4. Earn & burn mechanics
- Accrual: 1 pt per PLN 1 spent (accrued in full blocks of PLN 50); 50 pts per hour of sports activity per week (via a connected fitness app, max 50 pts/week); 50 pts for buying a 2nd Life product or renting equipment; 50 pts for using the sports service; 50 pts for submitting a review of a product or store (max 10 reviews per year; applies only to Decathlon products). Purchases made with a Loyalty Voucher or a Gift Card do not generate points.
- Threshold and redemption: every 250 pts → an automatic PLN 5 Loyalty Voucher; up to 10 vouchers can be used in a single transaction; no minimum order value when redeeming a voucher. As of 30.12.2025, vouchers are not available for purchases from third-party sellers (Marketplace).
- Reward forms: discount vouchers for in-store and online purchases; free delivery in the app; a free bike inspection up to 6 months after purchase (outside the terms); 365-day returns without a receipt (upon presenting the Account ID); offers and events reserved for program participants.
- Point expiration: points expire after 12 months without any transaction; vouchers expire 90 days after generation.
5. Emotional value
The program is consistent with the brand's DNA - it rewards playing sports itself, not only spending. Seasonal sports challenges (including "Rack up the kilometers and win a road bike," "Fluent in challenges") and the Decathlon GO community build a sense of belonging to an active community, not just to a discount program.
6. Gamification
- Weekly sports goal: 60 minutes of activity = 50 points - a mechanism for building a habit and returning to the app regularly.
- Seasonal themed challenges with physical prizes (a bike, sports equipment).
- Automatic, instant conversion of points into a voucher - a visible reward without waiting for a high redemption threshold.
7. Differentiation
Among retail programs in Poland, Decathlon Active stands out by rewarding physical activity itself (not only purchases) and by offering a bonus for circular choices (2nd Life, Rent). The absence of a minimum amount to redeem vouchers and the automatic conversion lower the barrier to claiming a reward compared with typical points-based programs.
8. Data and personalization
- The Decathlon Account stores the history of all purchases for 5 years, enables notifications about faulty product batches (recalls) and facilitates returns.
- Integration with fitness apps provides data on the participant's sports preferences and activity.
- Personalization: offers and communication tailored to the sports discipline and purchase history; push notifications via the mobile app.
9. Technology
- The Decathlon mobile app (iOS/Android) - the primary carrier of the program; the operator's communication directly equates "app = loyalty program."
- Integration with external fitness platforms: Decathlon Coach, Decathlon Ride, Domyos E-connected, Kinomap and other apps synced with the Decathlon Hub ecosystem.
- CRM + push notifications as the main communication channels with participants.
10. Communication and lifecycle
- Communication channels: in-app push, email, in-store employees (according to the operator, the most effective channel for recruiting to the program).
- Onboarding: instant account creation; until 1 June 2025, a 200 pt welcome bonus; activating the app and optionally connecting sports trackers.
- Retention: weekly points for sports activity maintain regular logins; seasonal challenges and personalized sports offers reduce participant churn.
11. Conclusion / inspiration for the almanac
Decathlon Active proves that a loyalty program can reinforce a brand's mission rather than merely generate transactions. Rewarding activity - not just spending - is a model worth considering wherever a brand has genuine value beyond the purchase to offer its customers.
