Descriptive sections

0. Summary

DeutschlandCard is a multi-partner points program running since 2008, operated by DeutschlandCard GmbH (Bertelsmann). Over the years it brought together more than 20 million participants collecting points at retail partners and in 400+ online shops. After the departure of its key partners - EDEKA and Netto - in early 2025, the program lost its economic foundation and will be definitively closed on November 30, 2026.

1. Objectives and context

The program aimed to build loyalty toward its partner networks and to collect purchase data for personalized customer activation. Its main KPI was reach (participant acquisition) and the acquisition of shopping-basket data. After losing EDEKA and Netto - and with those networks switching to PAYBACK - the coalition model lost profitability and could not be transformed into a digital alternative.

2. Target group

German consumers doing their everyday grocery shopping and refueling. The program was especially attractive to EDEKA, Netto, and Esso customers looking for a simple form of cashback on regular purchases.

3. Architecture and type

  1. Free registration - since March 2025 exclusively digital (app or portal; plastic cards were withdrawn on March 1, 2025).
  2. Points collection: 100 points for every €1 spent at brick-and-mortar partners (Esso) and online (400+ shops via the DeutschlandCard portal).
  3. Additional points from email coupons and partners' promotional campaigns.
  4. Points redemption: directly at the checkout at partners, in the Prämienshop (physical rewards, vouchers), or as a donation to public-benefit organizations.

4. Earn & burn mechanics

  • Accrual: 100 points for every €1 spent at partners (effective return rate of 1%); additional points from coupons and promotional campaigns
  • Threshold and redemption: minimum number of points to redeem: 100 pts (= €1); redemption possible in increments of 100 pts at a partner's checkout or in the Prämienshop
  • Reward formats: direct discount at the checkout (Esso), physical rewards and vouchers in the Prämienshop, donation to a charitable cause (WWF, RTL Stiftung, SOS Kinderdorf, and others)
  • Points expiration: 36 months from accrual, then through the end of the nearest quarter (e.g., points accrued in February 2023 expire on June 30, 2026); due to the program's closure - the absolute final deadline is November 30, 2026

5. Emotional value

DeutschlandCard built recognition through its mascot (fox/dragon) and a narrative about the simplicity of everyday saving. For years it was synonymous with "the second PAYBACK" - a cheaper, less complicated alternative for families that valued locality. The departure of its largest partners destroyed that bond, and the program failed to build a distinct digital identity in the final months of its operation.

6. Gamification

  • Points coupons (multiple points for selected products or partners) distributed via newsletters and the app
  • Games and quizzes (Sudoku, Quiz-Fuchs) in the app rewarded with bonus points
  • Wish list (Merkliste) - personalized reward recommendations from the Prämienshop

7. Differentiation

Between 2008 and 2024, DeutschlandCard stood out with a broad coalition focused on everyday grocery shopping - the combination of EDEKA, Netto, and Esso gave it unique reach in the "basket-of-life" segment. After their departure, the program stopped distinguishing itself from other cashback mechanisms, losing its raison d'être against PAYBACK and the individual networks' own apps.

8. Data and personalization

  • Collection of transactional data across all coalition partners (brick-and-mortar and online shops)
  • Consent to electronic marketing required to receive email coupons and the newsletter
  • Personalized coupons generated based on purchase history
  • New participation terms and privacy policy took effect on January 1, 2025; failure to accept them by December 31, 2024 resulted in automatic acceptance

9. Technology

  • Dedicated mobile app (iOS and Android), replaced the plastic card as of March 2025
  • Web portal with account management, the Prämienshop, and a price-comparison feature
  • Integration with online shops via tracking links (redirection through the DeutschlandCard portal)
  • Single sign-on between the portal and the Prämienshop

10. Communication and lifecycle

  • Email newsletter with coupons as the main channel for repeat activation
  • App with push notifications and gamification (quizzes, Sudoku)
  • Fully digital onboarding since March 2025
  • No status program; retention based solely on coupons and points promotions
  • Program closure communication: notice of the shutdown from Bertelsmann issued officially in 2026

11. Conclusion / inspiration for the almanac

DeutschlandCard is a textbook example of coalition-program risk: concentrating key volume with one or two partners creates existential dependence - the loss of EDEKA and Netto literally destroyed the business model. When designing a coalition, it is worth ensuring volume dispersion and exclusivity-guarantee clauses.
