Descriptive sections
0. Summary
Skarbonka is Auchan Polska's loyalty program combining points-based cashback with a three-tier status system (Silver, Gold, Platinum). For their purchases, participants accumulate Discount Points (equal to 0.5-1.5% of the basket value) as well as Status Points that determine their tier - the higher the tier, the higher the return. Special accounts are provided for seniors (60+) and holders of the Large Family Card.
1. Objectives and context
The program's goal is to increase visit frequency and concentrate customer spending within the Auchan network. The three-tier status model encourages customers to focus their purchases in a single network in order to maintain or raise their status. The program replaced a simpler mechanism of direct card-based discounts and was developed gradually - the last major modernization took place in 2022.
2. Target group
Adult consumers making regular grocery and general merchandise purchases at Auchan hypermarkets and supermarkets. Dedicated paths are aimed at seniors (the Skarbonka Senior account, 60+) and large families holding a Large Family Card - both groups start from the higher Gold status.
3. Architecture and type
- Registration - a plastic card issued at the checkout or a Digital Skarbonka Card generated in the Auchan Mobile App; registration is required (www.auchan.pl, the app, or a paper form at the Customer Service Point) within 30 days of the first scan - after this period the card is blocked.
- Earning - every z艂oty spent on products covered by the program generates Discount Points (a percentage of the basket value depending on status) plus 1 Status Point; additionally +15 Status Points for the first transaction each day (max. 500 Status Points per day).
- Status advancement - accumulating 5,000 Status Points within 12 months raises the status to Gold (1% cashback), 10,000 - to Platinum (1.5%); a lack of required activity within 12 months lowers the status by one tier; Status Points reset to zero with each advancement or reset.
- Redemption - Discount Points become available the day after they are earned; 1 Discount Point = PLN 1 discount deducted at the checkout after entering a four-digit Security Code; cash withdrawal is not possible.
4. Earn & burn mechanics
- Accrual: 0.5% of the value of purchases covered by the program (Silver Status), 1.0% (Gold Status), 1.5% (Platinum Status) recorded as Discount Points; in parallel 1 Status Point for every full z艂oty spent + 15 Status Points for the first transaction of the day
- Threshold and redemption: no minimum threshold for redeeming Discount Points; 1 Discount Point = PLN 1 discount at the checkout; max. PLN 2,000 per day; max. 50% of the price of a single product; Discount Points available the day after accrual
- Reward forms: cash discount deducted at the checkout; a 10% coupon (max. PLN 50) for an in-store purchase after reaching Status Point thresholds (2,500 pts - Silver, 5,000 pts - Gold/Platinum); weekly offers exclusive to participants; a birthday surprise gift by e-mail; an unlimited right to return non-defective products; a coupon for a reusable bag for PLN 0.01 after registration
- Point expiration: Discount Points expire on December 31 each year (applies to the pool collected from November 1 of the previous year to October 31 of the current year); Status Points reset upon advancement or after a 12-month status reset
5. Emotional value
Skarbonka is embedded in the rhythm of everyday shopping - the card is issued free of charge at the checkout, and its digital equivalent eliminates the need to carry plastic. Dedicated accounts for seniors and large families signal that the network addresses specific life situations rather than treating all customers identically. The unlimited right of return reinforces a sense of shopping security.
6. Gamification
- Three-tier status system with an annual progression window - exploits the endowment effect and status quo bias (the customer does not want to lose the level they have achieved)
- A 15 Status Point bonus for the first transaction each day - a reward for regular visits, reinforcing the habit
- A status degradation mechanism in the absence of activity - loss aversion as a reactivation factor
- Surprise threshold rewards (the 10% coupon) and a birthday gift - an element of surprise that lowers the mental cost of the program
7. Differentiation
Against the backdrop of the Polish super- and hypermarket market, Skarbonka stands out with explicitly defined paths for vulnerable groups (Senior, Large Family), built directly into the program's architecture rather than only into marketing communication. The status degradation mechanism is a rarity among direct competitors in the grocery segment.
8. Data and personalization
- Data collected: first name, last name, date of birth, e-mail address; transaction history per card; optionally location, gender, age/age group
- Personalization of offers based on purchase history and demographic attributes (Auchan press release 2022)
- Consents: acceptance of the terms is mandatory; e-mail marketing communication - optional consent (a condition for receiving the birthday gift and e-mail offers)
9. Technology
- Plastic card with an EAN code (+ two key fobs) or the Digital Skarbonka Card exclusively in the Auchan Mobile App (Android/iOS)
- Auchan Mobile App - balance preview, transaction history, digital card, Auchan Digital Account
- Integration with POS systems (staffed and self-service checkouts) and e-commerce (zakupy.auchan.pl)
- Skarbonka Payment Card (Visa Auchan) - issued by Credit Agricole Bank Polska / Smartney Grupa Oney S.A.; combines the loyalty card function with a credit card
10. Communication and lifecycle
- Communication channels: e-mail (weekly offers, status notifications, birthday gift), checkout receipt with the current balance, in-store readers, preview in the app / website
- Onboarding: card issued at the checkout or created digitally; registration required within 30 days of the first scan (after this period the card is blocked and points are cancelled); a welcome coupon for a bag for PLN 0.01
- Retention: weekly personalized offers, a daily first-transaction bonus, the risk of status degradation as a reactivation signal, personalization of messages based on purchase history
11. Conclusion / inspiration for the almanac
Skarbonka shows that cashback recorded as a virtual currency (1 pt = PLN 1) is easier to understand than abstract point conversion rates, and that account segmentation for vulnerable groups built directly into the terms (not just into marketing) strengthens affective loyalty faster than a uniform, universal program.
