Descriptive sections
0. Summary
The British Airways Club (formerly the Executive Club) is British Airways' multi-tier loyalty program built on the Avios currency. Members collect Avios and tier points for flights and purchases with partners, progressing through four status tiers (Blue, Bronze, Silver, Gold) and redeeming Avios for flight, hotel and other rewards. On 1 April 2025 the program was rebranded and changed its tier point accrual model from distance-based to GBP-spend-based.
1. Goals and context
The program's goal is to increase shopping basket value (cabin upgrades, purchase of flexible fares, ancillaries) and build loyalty among the most valuable passengers - business customers and long-haul travellers. The shift from a model based on air miles to a spend-based model (1 tier point per 1 GBP of eligible spend from 2025) is intended to strengthen yield and premium revenue.
2. Target group
The program is aimed primarily at frequent travellers (business and leisure), especially people flying from British airports, premium-fare customers (Club World, First) and BA American Express credit card users. The global segment includes transfer passengers connecting through the Heathrow hub.
3. Architecture and type
- Online registration at ba.com (free, from age 18); assignment of a membership number and Blue tier.
- Accrual of Avios for BA/AA/IB/Oneworld partner flights and for purchases with service partners (hotels, car rental, credit cards, shops). In parallel, accrual of tier points (TP) for eligible spend on BA-marketed flights and ancillaries.
- Status progression on an annual cycle (1 April - 31 March): Bronze (3,500 TP), Silver (7,500 TP), Gold (65,000 TP; min. 52,000 from BA/BA Holidays/ancillaries flights).
- Redeeming Avios for rewards: Reward Flights (airline tickets), Reward Stays, car rental, experiences, retail purchases and the "Avios and Money" option (a cash top-up against a reduced Avios pool).
4. Earn & burn mechanics
- Accrual: Avios for BA/AA flights: Blue 6×, Bronze 7×, Silver 8×, Gold 9× Avios per 1 GBP of eligible spend (base fare + carrier charges). Tier points: 1 TP per 1 GBP of eligible spend (from 1 April 2025); from 1 April 2026 additionally extra tier points for cabin class and fare type (e.g. Club World Fully Flex: +1,100 extra TP per sector). Avios are accrued 48 hours after the departure date.
- Threshold and redemption: A Reward Flight starts from 20,000 Avios + £5 in taxes for a flight to Europe; long-haul from 55,000 Avios + cash. Prices are dynamic - dependent on route, date and class. From 15 December 2025 reward flight prices rose by around 10% (BA flights) and up to 14% (partners).
- Reward forms: Reward Flights (BA and Oneworld partners), Reward Stays (hotels), car rental, experiences and retail, cabin upgrades, Companion Voucher (for spend on BA Amex cards), Avios transfer to other Avios programs (Iberia Plus, Aer Club, Qatar Privilege Club) and to partners (e.g. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club with a top-up).
- Point expiry: Avios expire after 36 consecutive months without any activity (no accrual, spending, buying or transferring of Avios). Tier points do not expire, but are reset to zero at the start of each new collection year (1 April).
5. Emotional value
The British Airways Club appeals to the aspirational identity of the globetrotter and the prestige of travelling in a higher class. The Gold tier is equivalent to Oneworld Emerald status - which opens access to First Class lounges at 13 airlines worldwide. The program communicates itself as a gateway to exclusive travel experiences, not merely a discount mechanism.
6. Gamification
- Four public status tiers (Blue → Bronze → Silver → Gold) with clear, measurable tier point thresholds create a progression path and a status-race effect.
- The Gold Guest List (a super-tier above 65,000 TP) and Gold for Life (lifetime status upon reaching a cumulative threshold) act as aspirational "ultimate goals".
- An Upgrade Voucher at 35,000 TP (an upgrade for two people) and another at 50,000 TP reinforce motivation halfway to Gold.
- Tier point milestones with bonus Avios (from 1 April 2025) reward every subsequent step, not just a status advancement.
- The annual tier point reset (31 March) creates a cycle that requires "defending" status each year.
7. Differentiation
The British Airways Club stands out through its position in the IAG ecosystem: Avios are a shared currency for British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways, Finnair and several dozen other partners, making them one of the most portable loyalty currencies in the world. The spend-based model (tier points per GBP, not per mile) is close to Delta SkyMiles and United MileagePlus and sets the program apart from the traditional mile-based schemes of European carriers.
8. Data and personalization
- The program collects extensive transactional data: routes, cabin classes, ancillaries, BA Amex credit card data, behaviour on ba.com.
- AGL (Avios Group Limited) and BA are separate Data Controllers under UK GDPR.
- Data is shared with IAG partners, service and marketing partners subject to consent; transfer of data to countries without data protection law is explicitly provided for in the terms (§4.3.2).
- Personalization: targeting of Avios and Reward Flights offers, bonus Avios for holiday packages, email communication tailored to status and travel history.
9. Technology
- British Airways mobile app (iOS/Android): Avios management, Reward Flights bookings, digital membership card, push notifications.
- The Avios platform is managed by AGL (Avios Group Limited) - a company within the IAG group.
- GDS integration (Sabre, Amadeus, Galileo) for accruing tier points and Avios via travel agencies.
- Partner integrations: BA American Express credit cards (UK), hotels (Marriott, IHG, Hilton and others), car rental (Avis, Hertz and others), e-commerce platforms.
- Household Account: up to 7 people can combine Avios into a shared pool; Family & Friends List: up to 5 people from outside the household for redeeming rewards.
10. Communication and lifecycle
- Communication: email, mobile app, ba.com; correspondence tailored to status and travel history.
- Onboarding: instant online account activation; digital card available in the app; no mandatory welcome email with benefits beyond a registration confirmation.
- Retention: the annual status cycle forces regular flying; reminders about upcoming status expiry; bonus Avios promotions and tier point boosts during selected periods; the Companion Voucher (BA Amex card) as a retention mechanism not directly tied to flights.
- Reactivation: warnings about Avios expiry are not sent proactively (no push notification before expiry after 36 months - outside the terms).
11. Conclusion / inspiration for the almanac
The spend-based model (1 TP per 1 GBP) simplifies accrual and shifts incentives toward ticket value rather than the number of flights - when designing your own program it is worth considering whether a premium for higher spend (more Avios per £1 at Gold) is a better way to encourage the purchase of more expensive fares than a flat bonus for cabin class.
